Raphael Varane has been a long-term target of Manchester United, as the Red Devils missed out on his signature in 2011, ironically after Jose Mourinho signed him when he was in charge of Real Madrid for a reported fee of around €10 million
Now the former Chelsea boss wants the Frenchman under his wing at Old Trafford, according to Spanish publications. The deal would reportedly cost United around £54 million.
Amazingly, the French international, has only made 19 starts in the league this season, and at the age of 24, you would think that Varane will be eager to become a regular starter sooner rather than later, and whether that means becoming a first-team regular at Real Madrid or elsewhere remains to be seen. This deal could well be one of the transfer sagas of the summer.
In my opinion, I think it would be a great signing for United but not a priority like a centre-midfielder or potentially a right-winger. Jose Mourinho has spent big during his time at United, and has already brought in two big-money centre-back signings in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, with the latter still adjusting to life in England. Varane would be an upgrade on those two for sure, and a potential partnership of Varane and Bailly could set United in good stead for the best part of the next decade.
In relation to the fee, £54 million is a bargain in today’s market for a French international and one of the best young centre backs in Europe. In addition, I believe the former Lens man would have no trouble settling into the Premier League, due to his pace and physicality. All in all, it would be good business for United in my opinion. It starts to become a bad deal the moment when David De Gea becomes involved, United must keep him at all costs.
